Adventures in Kelowna
We went camping in Kelowna this Labour Day weekend. We stayed at Bear Creek campground, which is on the west side of the lake and hiked the canyon nearby. This is the new-ish bridge which crosses the lake, as seen from the canyon hike.
On the way out of the canyon we found this really weird tree which would have provided an awesome emergency camping spot had something horrible happened to our tent!
We visited the resort where Andrew's family used to vacation when he was growing up. He has lots of good memories there!
And then he went paintballing, which he had been looking forward to for months.
Around the campfire at night... having no electricity, we invented what we like to call "Dueling iPods." We cued up our ipods to the same song, counted to three, and pressed play... it made for some good sing-a-longs.
On the Sunday we rented bicycles and went up to Myra Canyon, which is where part of the old Kettle Valley Railway (that joined the interior with the Lower Mainland) used to run.
This area and most of the trestle bridges were wiped out by wildfire in 2003, but all the bridges have been re-built and it is both fascinating and scary to see how they were built along cliffsides, and to think that trains used to run along them.
There are also several tunnels through the rocky cliffs... a lot of fun to bike through :)
This is a view of one of the tallest and longest trestle bridges... made out of steel by necessity due to its size. We'd recommend this ride to anyone visiting Kelowna. It was an easy, level ride and the views and bridges were fantastic.
